Russia wants to ban hardcore rock styles, emo and goth
Russia is considering a new law that would make hardcore punk style emo and goth music illegal, saying that they are 'negative culture' which encourage depression, social withdrawal and even suicide.
Thesun.co.uk reports that legislation is now being created to regulate websites and have emo and goth fashion banned in schools and government buildings.
The laws are meant to protect the supposed "dangerous teen trend" which encourage depression and suicide.
Emo music, characterised by high emotional content and alternation between quiet and loud sounds, started in the US in the 1980s as part of the punk movement and has gained mainstream popularity in recent years. Critics slam emo music as being negative culture and encouraging anti-social behaviour and glorifying suicide.
Dmitry Gilevich of the Russian emo band Maio said: "Expressing psychological emotions is not forbidden by law."
