The sale of the Swedish marque Saab by General Motors in the US has been called off.

GM has confirmed a would-be buyer for the auto unit pulled out at the last moment.

While saying it was very disappointed, Swedish sportscar maker, Koenigsegg, said it could no longer carry out the acquisition.

GM has said it will now have to determine how to advance the sale and will advise next steps on the steps it will take.

The two sides had announced a preliminary agreement over the sale of Saab in June.
