Academy Award-winning director, Roman Polanski, has been granted bail in Switzerland.

Switzerland's top criminal court has granted bail of $4.5 million, on the assurance Polanski will remain in the country for any future extradition hearing.

US prosecutors have asked Switzerland to extradite the 76-year-old Polanski for sentencing on a statutory rape conviction which has stood since 1977.

Polanski fled Los Angeles ahead of his sentencing, and remained a fugitive until being arrested in Zurich in September.

Polanski will now be under constant electronic surveillance and under house arrest in his Swiss chalet.

A bracelet alarm will be activated if he leaves his chalet.

No hearing date for the US extradition request has been announced.

Polanski allowed out on bail

He should go to jail, and Ted the self confessed serial Pedophile should be his cellmate.
