DAMASCUS, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian Foreign Ministry on Monday denied as "lies" recent reports about meetings between Syrian and Israeli officials, according to the state news agency SANA.

The ministry said in a statement that the Syrian government is clear about its stance toward the Palestinian issue and the liberation of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in accordance with the related international resolutions.

It said the parties advertising for such false news aim to undermine the Syrian stance toward the "Israeli occupation."

Earlier in the day, media reports claimed that Israeli and Syrian officials met under Russian mediation in the Russian-run base of Hmemim in northwestern Syria.

Reports said the Israelis demanded an end to the Iranian presence in Syria while the Syrian officials demanded an end of the sanctions imposed on Syria.
