Romanian qualifier Jaqueline Cristian pulled off an upset win Monday in the opening round of the Tenerife (Spain) Ladies Open, beating second-seeded Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
Cristian, a 23-year-old who is ranked 108th in the world, lost the last three games in the second set but bounced back to take the first five games of the third set and pull away.
The only other seeded player in action Monday, No. 6 Shuai Zhang of China, also lost, beaten by another Chinese player, Xinyu Wang, 6-2, 6-1.
Also earning first-round wins were the United States' Ann Li, Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu.

Another Ukrainian, Lesia Tsurenko, beat China's Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 6-3, and the United States' Bernarda Pera downed Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic 7-6 (3), 6-3.
The tournament's top four seeds -- No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, No. 2 Garbine Muguruza of Spain, No. 3 Maria Sakkari of Greece and No. 4 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia -- received first-round byes.
